Where are you from? Where are you coming in from? Where are you going next? TANK’s idea of travel moves beyond crude notions of geography. We prize open-ended movement over fixed destinations and disorientation over self-actualisation. Our winter Travel issue delights in the ability of an unfamiliar space to both heighten and suspend our sense of reality.

In the wake of their collaborative Shanghai exhibition, The Artist is Present, Gucci director Alessandro Michele and artist Maurizo Cattelan discuss their mixing of the real and the replicated in a pair of extended interviews. Topics traversed include Michele’s strategy of privileging simulacra as well as the Chinese idea of shanzhai – the repurposing of originals and copies. Elsewhere in our itinerary, Nadifa Mohamed sets out for Paris, Philippa Snow visits the Rodeo in Dallas and Lamorna Ash explores the dilation of time at the SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain.

In Paris, Tae Lee talks to Setsuko Klossowska de Rola, widow of the great Balthus, about samurai values, tragic love stories and the shared sensibility between France and Japan, while away from the crowds, artist Ellie Ga recounts the five months she spent on a research vessel at the North Pole in conversation with Anna Della Subin.

Visual attractions include photography from Eric Chakeen, Richard Dowker and Catherine Hyland, although these are far from your regular holiday snaps. Among our other stops are India, Norway and an unique trip to the remote, isolated island of St Helena. Souvenirs come courtesy of Montblanc, Tasaki Atelier and Hermès.

We hope the issue takes you places!
